Comfort Behavior

Roo joined our family just three short days ago. He arrived late evening on Satruday Sept 14. He came off the trailer stoic and beyond his years but as his little body stepped out I could't but wonder if this 3 yr old was not quite what we had thought.

When you think about a 3 yr old unhandled stud colt showing up you don't think about the little baby who will actually be there. Roo has been sweet, quiet and curious. His kind eye has my heart already. I see so much of my past heart horses in his energy, movement and physicality. He has the face of Legend and the heart of Fish Stick (VisStok).

Comfort for a horse comes in many signals. One of my favorites is creating a space where it is safe to explore. This is paramount in bringing along a young horse in his education. A baby needs to learn not only all things he will need to navigate people but also how to navigate being a horse. Arguably, the more important of the two. Exploring communications strategies Roo wanted to engage in playful behavior tonight when got surpirsed. It's the first time I've seen him make a choice to not stay quiet and reserved.
